Get to Know Me

Sascha Maurer is a Therapeutic Recreation graduate certificate student at Algonquin College (’23). In 2022 he completed his Developmental Services Worker diploma and has worked in community and school settings supporting people with physical and cognitive challenges.

Through his experience, Sascha has developed a passion for using technology to support individuals experiencing barriers to  meaningful recreation and leisure opportunities, and is
developing a gamified planner for web and mobile devices to support neurodivergent groups.

He pitched this business concept in a regional pitch competition and won first place.

He is looking forward to pursuing a Bachelor’s in a relevant field starting Fall ’23 to develop the skills necessary to better help people lead more fulfilling lives.

Experience

From fine arts to music touring to culinary management, my passions have allowed me to accumulate expertise I put into use every day while administering therapeutic recreation to my clients. Here are some key points:

  • Traveled, performed, recorded music, and volunteered for charities nation-wide

  • Owner of Jonesin’ for Cake, specializing in Fine Art Cakes and Cookies

  • Executive chef with a culinary team that provided seniors with high-quality meals, and a culinary program in partnership with the Therapeutic Recreation Team

  • Director of Recreation for LTC facilities

Education

I have studied extensively over the past two decades in a multitude of disciplines, leading to an educational career spanning the Ontario College of Art and Design, Fanshawe College, Canadore College, and most recently, Brock University.

Life Experience

My Own Journey To Self Discovery

Throughout my journey, I have participated in diverse pursuits, encompassing music, painting, culinary arts, and volunteer work. Overcoming obstacles, including my daughter’s leukemia battle, has reinforced my determination and led me to discover my true calling in Therapeutic Recreation.

My passion is motivated by my mission to continue leading with connection, creativity and curiosity. I kick down doors so others can walk through them.
