DESCRIPTION: The “Epic Empowerment for Recovery” program is a therapeutic exercise designed to aid youth in recovery and personal development by integrating the engaging and imaginative world of tabletop role-playing games, specifically using the game Critical Core. This innovative session leverages the structured gameplay and storytelling elements of role-playing games to create a supportive environment where participants can explore personal challenges, develop social skills, and enhance problem-solving abilities.

DESCRIPTION
The Braveheart Program is a specialized sibling support program designed to empower and uplift siblings of individuals affected by trauma, violence, intellectual and developmental disabilities, physical disabilities, or life-threatening illnesses. This unique program combines therapeutic recreation and peer connection to create a safe and supportive environment where children can express their emotions, develop coping skills, and foster a sense of belonging.
Co-facilitated by a Recreation Therapy Assistant (RecTA) and a Registered Social Worker, Braveheart provides a structured yet nurturing space for children to share their experiences, celebrate their individuality, and strengthen their family bonds. Each session features engaging activities that promote resilience, emotional expression, and community building.
Participants will explore themes of emotional regulation, stress management, and self-expression through creative, recreational, and therapeutic exercises. The program concludes with a special group potluck on March 1, celebrating the connections and growth achieved throughout the sessions.
BRAVEHEART OUTCOMES
Braveheart creates a safe and supportive environment where children can openly express all emotions, including difficult or negative ones, without fear of shame or guilt. This normalizes their experiences, fostering a sense of shared understanding and community.
The program equips children with effective coping strategies to manage stress and regulate their emotions during challenging moments, promoting resilience and emotional well-being
Participants feel valued, heard, and understood, fostering a strong sense of belonging and ensuring they feel acknowledged and supported within the group.

INTENDED BRAVEHEART AUDIENCE
The Braveheart Program is specifically designed for siblings aged 8 to 12 years who are navigating the challenges of having family members affected by trauma, disabilities, or life-threatening illnesses. The program is ideal for families seeking a supportive environment for their children to connect with peers, develop resilience, and strengthen family bonds. Capacity is limited to 8 participants, with the ability to support up to 10 children if additional JJRT staff are available.

Sarah Van Dyk is a compassionate and skilled Registered Social Worker with a Bachelor of Social Work degree earned in 2004. With a passion for fostering growth and healing, Sarah specializes in working with children, families, and individuals through the principles of attachment theory, trauma-informed care, and equity-driven practices.
As a proud member of the Jess Jones Recreation Therapy (JJRT) team, Sarah is dedicated to providing client-centered support aligned with JJRT’s unique therapeutic lens. Her work focuses on critical areas such as grief and loss, emotional regulation, life skills development, activities of daily living, and safety. The Junior Chefs Cooking Program is a Therapeutic Recreation initiative tailored for neurotypical and neurodivergent youth aged 13-17. Participants will engage in hands-on cooking experiences, learning culinary skills in a supportive and inclusive environment.

Through hands-on experience, participants learn about nutrition, leading to healthier eating habits and a greater appreciation for diverse foods. DESCRIPTION
The Braveheart Program is a specialized sibling support program designed to empower and uplift siblings of individuals affected by trauma, violence, intellectual and developmental disabilities, physical disabilities, or life-threatening illnesses. This unique program combines therapeutic recreation and peer connection to create a safe and supportive environment where children can express their emotions, develop coping skills, and foster a sense of belonging.
Co-facilitated by a Recreation Therapy Assistant (RecTA) and a Registered Social Worker, Braveheart provides a structured yet nurturing space for children to share their experiences, celebrate their individuality, and strengthen their family bonds. Each session features engaging activities that promote resilience, emotional expression, and community building.
Participants will explore themes of emotional regulation, stress management, and self-expression through creative, recreational, and therapeutic exercises. The program concludes with a special group potluck on March 1, celebrating the connections and growth achieved throughout the sessions.
BRAVEHEART OUTCOMES
Braveheart creates a safe and supportive environment where children can openly express all emotions, including difficult or negative ones, without fear of shame or guilt. This normalizes their experiences, fostering a sense of shared understanding and community.

Capacity is limited to 8 participants, with the ability to support up to 10 children if additional JJRT staff are available.

Sarah Van Dyk is a compassionate and skilled Registered Social Worker with a Bachelor of Social Work degree earned in 2004. With a passion for fostering growth and healing, Sarah specializes in working with children, families, and individuals through the principles of attachment theory, trauma-informed care, and equity-driven practices.
As a proud member of the Jess Jones Recreation Therapy (JJRT) team, Sarah is dedicated to providing client-centered support aligned with JJRT’s unique therapeutic lens. Her work focuses on critical areas such as grief and loss, emotional regulation, life skills development, activities of daily living, and safety. DESCRIPTION
The Braveheart Program is a specialized sibling support program designed to empower and uplift siblings of individuals affected by trauma, violence, intellectual and developmental disabilities, physical disabilities, or life-threatening illnesses. This unique program combines therapeutic recreation and peer connection to create a safe and supportive environment where children can express their emotions, develop coping skills, and foster a sense of belonging.
Co-facilitated by a Recreation Therapy Assistant (RecTA) and a Registered Social Worker, Braveheart provides a structured yet nurturing space for children to share their experiences, celebrate their individuality, and strengthen their family bonds. Each session features engaging activities that promote resilience, emotional expression, and community building.
Participants will explore themes of emotional regulation, stress management, and self-expression through creative, recreational, and therapeutic exercises. The program concludes with a special group potluck on March 1, celebrating the connections and growth achieved throughout the sessions.
BRAVEHEART OUTCOMES
Braveheart creates a safe and supportive environment where children can openly express all emotions, including difficult or negative ones, without fear of shame or guilt. This normalizes their experiences, fostering a sense of shared understanding and community.
The program equips children with effective coping strategies to manage stress and regulate their emotions during challenging moments, promoting resilience and emotional well-being
Participants feel valued, heard, and understood, fostering a strong sense of belonging and ensuring they feel acknowledged and supported within the group.

INTENDED BRAVEHEART AUDIENCE
The Braveheart Program is specifically designed for siblings aged 8 to 12 years who are navigating the challenges of having family members affected by trauma, disabilities, or life-threatening illnesses. The program is ideal for families seeking a supportive environment for their children to connect with peers, develop resilience, and strengthen family bonds. Capacity is limited to 8 participants, with the ability to support up to 10 children if additional JJRT staff are available.

As a proud member of the Jess Jones Recreation Therapy (JJRT) team, Sarah is dedicated to providing client-centered support aligned with JJRT’s unique therapeutic lens. Her work focuses on critical areas such as grief and loss, emotional regulation, life skills development, activities of daily living, and safety. The Braveheart Program is a specialized sibling support program designed to empower and uplift siblings of individuals affected by trauma, violence, intellectual and developmental disabilities, physical disabilities, or life-threatening illnesses. This unique program combines therapeutic recreation and peer connection to create a safe and supportive environment where children can express their emotions, develop coping skills, and foster a sense of belonging.
Co-facilitated by a Recreation Therapy Assistant (RecTA) and a Registered Social Worker, Braveheart provides a structured yet nurturing space for children to share their experiences, celebrate their individuality, and strengthen their family bonds. Each session features engaging activities that promote resilience, emotional expression, and community building.
Participants will explore themes of emotional regulation, stress management, and self-expression through creative, recreational, and therapeutic exercises. The program concludes with a special group potluck on March 1, celebrating the connections and growth achieved throughout the sessions.

The “Epic Empowerment for Recovery” program is a dynamic and therapeutic initiative designed to support youth in recovery and personal development. By integrating the imaginative world of tabletop role-playing games, specifically Critical Core, participants embark on an interactive journey of self-discovery, creativity, and growth.
Through structured gameplay and collaborative storytelling, participants create characters and explore narratives that mirror real-life challenges. This immersive experience fosters emotional expression, teamwork, and empowerment within a safe and supportive environment. The program encourages participants to confront personal issues through the lens of the game, providing a controlled space for decision-making, emotional regulation, and problem-solving.
The unique mechanics of Critical Core promote resilience, empathy, and self-esteem. DESCRIPTION
The Braveheart Program is a specialized sibling support program designed to empower and uplift siblings of individuals affected by trauma, violence, intellectual and developmental disabilities, physical disabilities, or life-threatening illnesses. This unique program combines therapeutic recreation and peer connection to create a safe and supportive environment where children can express their emotions, develop coping skills, and foster a sense of belonging.
Co-facilitated by a Recreation Therapy Assistant (RecTA) and a Registered Social Worker, Braveheart provides a structured yet nurturing space for children to share their experiences, celebrate their individuality, and strengthen their family bonds. Each session features engaging activities that promote resilience, emotional expression, and community building.
Participants will explore themes of emotional regulation, stress management, and self-expression through creative, recreational, and therapeutic exercises. The program concludes with a special group potluck on March 1, celebrating the connections and growth achieved throughout the sessions.
BRAVEHEART OUTCOMES
Braveheart creates a safe and supportive environment where children can openly express all emotions, including difficult or negative ones, without fear of shame or guilt. This normalizes their experiences, fostering a sense of shared understanding and community.
The program equips children with effective coping strategies to manage stress and regulate their emotions during challenging moments, promoting resilience and emotional well-being
Participants feel valued, heard, and understood, fostering a strong sense of belonging and ensuring they feel acknowledged and supported within the group.
Through therapeutic recreation, children build confidence, improve their social skills, and strengthen their family relationships.
INTENDED BRAVEHEART AUDIENCE
The Braveheart Program is specifically designed for siblings aged 8 to 12 years who are navigating the challenges of having family members affected by trauma, disabilities, or life-threatening illnesses. The program is ideal for families seeking a supportive environment for their children to connect with peers, develop resilience, and strengthen family bonds. Capacity is limited to 8 participants, with the ability to support up to 10 children if additional JJRT staff are available.

Sarah Van Dyk
Registered Social Worker, Advocate for Holistic Family Support, JJRT Team Member
Sarah Van Dyk is a compassionate and skilled Registered Social Worker with a Bachelor of Social Work degree earned in 2004. With a passion for fostering growth and healing, Sarah specializes in working with children, families, and individuals through the principles of attachment theory, trauma-informed care, and equity-driven practices.
As a proud member of the Jess Jones Recreation Therapy (JJRT) team, Sarah is dedicated to providing client-centered support aligned with JJRT’s unique therapeutic lens. Her work focuses on critical areas such as grief and loss, emotional regulation, life skills development, activities of daily living, and safety. She emphasizes connection, creativity, and curiosity in her practice to empower families to navigate challenges and celebrate their strengths.
Outside of her professional role, Sarah finds inspiration in nature and creativity. She enjoys activities like gardening, hiking, biking, and exploring thrift shops. She also cherishes time with her family, sharing laughter, listening to vinyl records, and nurturing her love for the outdoors.
